Feminist Anthropology: Call for Editor(s)

Proposal Due: June 1, 2026.

The Association for Feminist Anthropology (AFA) invites proposals for the next Editor(s)-in-Chief of Feminist Anthropology (FA) for a three-year term beginning January 1, 2027 (ending December 31, 2029).

Feminist Anthropology was founded in 2020 and has quickly established itself as a premier journal for feminist scholarship in anthropology and beyond. The journal publishes work that champions epistemological and methodological approaches that speak to issues of gender equity, inclusion, and radical possibility. It magnifies and centers scholarship that has been cast to the margins and features work that engages all fields of anthropology.

Editing the journal offers a unique opportunity to shape feminist anthropology’s identity and future. The upcoming editorial term coincides with a broader anniversary period for both the journal and the section, which offers a unique opportunity to reflect on FA’s achievements while actively reshaping the next era of feminist scholarship.

We are excited for the new editor(s) to build on the recent growth and success of FA. FA is indexed in Scopus and Web of Science's Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI). In 2025, FA ranked third in readership across the AAA journal portfolio, trailing only the association's two flagship journals. Moreover, FA’s most recent impact factor placed it in the top tier of anthropology journals worldwide, signaling its growing influence and the field's strong engagement with feminist anthropological scholarship. This trajectory positions FA as an increasingly vital venue for cutting-edge research at the intersection of feminist theory and anthropological inquiry. The new editor(s) will be able to build on this incredible success, with guidance and support from the outgoing editors as well as enhanced resources from the AAA, including a managing editor team to help with administrative duties and peer review support.

The fundamental responsibility of the new editor(s) will be to expertly guide the solicitation, peer review, selection, and publication of articles and special issues. The journal also champions an inclusive and equitable citation practice. The editor(s) are supported by an enthusiastic editorial board and an advisory board as well as administrative resources from the AAA. The editor(s) safeguard collegiality in the field and promote authors’ intellectual development and career progress by providing timely and constructive reviews, line and developmental editing, publication decisions and publication of accepted manuscripts.

The editor or editorial team is not expected to have expertise in all subfields, but must be interested in creatively developing incisive and inclusive conversations within and across subfields and forms of practice. We expect this to include engagement with critical scholarly topics and public debate and with new developments in digital publishing and use of media. promoting the journal, the field, and researchers by providing presentations, workshops and materials to potential authors at the AAA meetings and other relevant professional meetings. The editors also communicate with the AAA regularly, and provide annual reports to the AAA and the AFA. FA's editor(s) are appointed by and report to the board of the AFA. Upon appointment, the editor(s) become an ex-officio member of the AFA board. The editorial team also has responsibility for maintaining FA’s web and social media presence.

Launched in 2020, FA was originally edited by Sameena Mulla and Dána-Ain Davis. Starting in 2023, FA was edited by Allison Bloom, Sreeparna Chattopdhyay, April Petillo, and M. Gabriela Torres. Currently, FA is co-edited by April Petillo, and M. Gabriela Torres. The incoming editors will have a period of overlap with the current editors to support a smooth transition during the apprenticeship period from January to June 2027, prior to assuming full editorial responsibility. Please see the timeline below.
